The Why

Positives of
Asynchronous Online Education

Working from Home

Asynchronous learning opens doors to students with different schedules, responsibilities, and needs. It offers the flexibility for students to access their course materials and complete assignments on their own time. Online programs also attract a range of students from across the country, bringing diverse perspectives and experiences to the classroom.

Challenges of
Asynchronous Online Education

Texting

No face-to-face interactions mean difficulty in creating meaningful discussions between students, especially when it comes to discussing complex topics like social justice. Since students come from a wide range of backgrounds and locations, they may have differing levels of experience with these sensitive topics, potentially leading to misunderstandings, microaggressions, or insensitive comments in discussions. These challenges require evidence-based strategies to help all students feel ready to engage in the learning process with bravery.

When I first started teaching asynchronously, I had difficulty engaging my students in meaningful conversations. Bravitas was born out of the need to create braver environments in online social work education.

My name is Christine Chapais, and I'm passionate about helping other social work educators make an impact in their students' lives, no matter the platform. As a Licensed Social Worker, Doctoral Social Work student, Director of Online MSW Programs, and an Assistant Professor of Teaching at Rutgers School of Social Work,  I know brave spaces can make all the difference.

As a White woman, I recognize my privilege and how my identity impacts my approach to sensitive topics in my classroom. This platform is a reflection of my commitment to creating a transformational online environment where every student feels seen, heard, and supported.

Why "Brave" Spaces?

Why "Brave" Spaces Over Others?

Brave spaces are environments where individuals are encouraged to speak up, take risks, and engage in difficult conversations with courage and respect. While there are many types of spaces, I chose brave spaces because it acknowledges discomfort goes hand in hand with growth.
