SETTING THE TONE
Establish an inviting, student-centered learning environment from the beginning of the semester to develop engagement, trust, and inclusivity.
Practices
-
Send a welcome email at least one week before the course begins to establish an early connection with students. Include a link to your liquid syllabus so they can review course expectations and feel prepared before the first day.
-
Use a student survey to better understand your students' backgrounds, learning needs, and experiences to help you tailor your teaching approach for a more supportive learning environment.
-
Humanize your syllabus by using accessible language, inclusive policies, and a student-centered tone.

Student Voice
I always feel so anxious before the start of the semester. It's frustrating that I can't get into the course until the first day of class. I like to feel well-prepared, and having the information I need before that first day calms my nerves.
Tools & Resources
A liquid syllabus is an accessible, public website outside of the LMS to include in your welcome email. It will include a short and friendly welcome video along with some of the important parts of your syllabus in a student-centered tone. See an example of an already created liquid syllabus here you can easily re-create using Google Sites. (These links bring you to an external page).
In addition to sending out your initial e-mail, consider posting a welcome announcement on the first day of class. (Downloadable).
Get to know your audience. From cultural background to technology fluency, a survey can help you tailor your teaching strategies based on the students in your course. (Downloadable).
