COMMUNITY

Create a sense of belonging and collaboration in an online setting.

Practices

  • Build student confidence and sense of belonging through self-affirming icebreakers that encourage student strengths, values, and experiences.

  • Create an optional, ungraded "Student Lounge" discussion thread where students can share experiences, resources, and connect beyond the classroom.

  • Set up a "Wisdom Wall" where students can post key takeaways, insights, or real-world applications of the course material.

  • When reviewing student contributions, highlight connections between students. For example, if one student mentions a particular hobby or practicum placement, acknowledge that another student shares a similar experience.

  • Ensure any optional synchronous Zoom sessions offered also have the opportunity for peer connection.

  • Feature Student Spotlights in course announcements to recognize great insights, thoughtful discussion posts, or even some fun facts about your students.
