MODERATING
Create a brave learning space by regularly moderating discussion threads and addressing microaggressions or insensitive comments with care and accountability.
Practices
-
Co-create expectations for discussion threads from the beginning of the semester. Redirect students to this agreement and use the NASW Code of Ethics as a foundational guide for respectful and professional engagement.
-
Actively monitor discussion boards to ensure respectful engagement.
-
Address insensitive comments directly but constructively. Call-in versus call-out to guide students toward deeper understanding without shutting down.
-
Use the R.A.V.E.N. approach to address microaggressions and racial bias.
-
Follow up on challenging conversations privately when needed to offer additional support.
-
When peers address harmful comments before you can moderate, acknowledge the strengths of the discussion, and encourage positive engagement.
