COMMUNICATION
Ensure that all communication is mindful, transparent, and
predictable to create a sense of structure and support.
Practices
-
Maintain consistent communication by sending regular updates or scheduling weekly announcements that prepare students for the upcoming module. Use these announcements to summarize key takeaways or set clear expectations for upcoming assignments.
-
Use clear language and avoid unnecessary jargon to ensure instructions and expectations are easily understood by all students.
-
Communicate your response times so students know when they can expect to hear back from you (i.e., "I respond to emails within 24 hours on weekdays and 48 hours on weekends and holidays").
-
Be thoughtful and professional when reaching out to your students. Acknowledge previous information shared to remind them you care and that their work is seen and valued.
-
Use multiple communication formats to increase accessibility and engagement. Throw in some gifs, pictures, emojis, or videos to make your communication more relatable and showcase your personality.
Student Voice
Being an online student can feel very lonely. I miss being in class in person, but I only have time for online classes. I feel much more connected when my professors reach out regularly. I also really like it when I can tell they know who I am and that I'm not just a random name on a screen.
